How to save money on public transportation in Venice

Hi again friends!
A few days ago we posted some feedbacks we gathered from tourists in Venice
One of the most interesting things they told us was “I didn’t know that you can make a public transportation card that can help you save lots of money”.
Wait a second. Public transporation card? It sounds awesome, but if you look for it on official Venice website you won’t find any information about it.
Don’t you believe me? I spent 30 minutes earlier, and I’m italian so navigating those italian only websites is easier for me, and I couldn’t find any information about it, even knowing what I was looking for.
See for yourself (but came back here for the solution to this problem 😉 ).
These are the official webistes for public transportation in Venice:
Did you find anything? Yes, there are daily/weekly tickets but their price is CRAZY and you should NEVER buy them
The solutions exists and it’s called “Venezia unica city pass” (it was called IMOB until a few months ago). It’s the official public transportation card that locals use.
And you know what? Even if you’re not local, you can buy it as well!
The price is 40€, but it lasts for 5 years. Yes, FIVE fucking years.
You’ll have to buy tickets for each trip you want to make, but their price will be 1.30€ instead of 7€
It’s easy to do the math… If you plan to stay for more than a couple of days or you think you’ll come back to Venice again, and you think you’ll use the vaporetto at least 5 times, then go for it!
The only catch is that you can’t share it, so if you’re a family each one of you has to have one card.
So, let’s recap:
– What is it?
Venezia Unica City Pass is a public transportation card you can make, for a fee, that will reduce greatly the price of each ticket (bus or boat).
– How much does it cost?
It costs 40€ to make and it lasts 5 years, even if you go back and come to Venice another time.
– What are the advantages?
The vaporetti (boats) tickets will cost 1.30€ each instead of 7€ each
– How and where do i make it?
At any ACTV (public transporation company) boot. There is a big one in Piazzale Roma, where all the buses arrive in Venice.
You’ll need a valid document, and two pictures.
– How does it work?
They will immediately make you one card, but you must remember to put tickets inside it! You can purchase bus and boat tickets right there at the ACTV boot, but also in lots of other places like tobacco shops and some bars (they should have an ACTV sticker on their door).
Give them the your Venice card and they’ll charge your tickets inside it.
Remember to validate your ticket each time you enter a bus or boat.
A Venice card works for only one person (you’ll have your face and name on it), so each one of your group should get one. You can’t use one for everybody.
We are sure that this tip will help you save lots of money. If you have any problem or other questions about this or other topics don’t be shy, write us! It’s really important for us that you’ll enjoy your stay in Venice and we only want to help!
