Venice Carnival: Events – part 1
Hi guys!
Are you excited? Venice Carnival is almost here, easily the most visited holiday of the year.
The city is preparing several events throughout all the period, starting Saturday 31st and ending on Mardi gras (Martedì Grasso) on the 17th of February.
The official website is: http://www.carnevale.venezia.it/en/events-list/
We’re just going to start by giving you a few advises on the events we think will be the most interesting, so please stay with us also the next few days for more updates!
As we said, the opening party will be Saturday 31st. It’s definitely a must go. It will officially start at 6pm at Cannareggio, easily reached from the train station.
My advise is: get there and see the opening show, then get something quick to eat somewhere else. There are several excellent take away pizzerias not far away. Buy some drinks – beers or whatever you want at the pizzeria or at supermarkets and then go back to Cannareggio for the rest of the party. You will avoid spending all your evening waiting in overcrowded restaurants around that area.
There are also two more interesting events the day after, Sunday the 1st.
The first one is a funny masked – Carnival themed – regatta, which will start at 11am at Punta della Dogana, my favourite place of Venice. If you don’t mind waking up early, get to Zattere and have a beautiful walk along the canal, reach Punta della Dogana where you will enjoy one of the best views of Venice – the bay of San Marco and all Piazza San Marco, seen from the other side of the canal.
The regatta will officially start at 11.15 and will reach Cannareggio at about 11.45, where you will also be offered local food and wine (for free).
At the same time, always at punta della dogana, there will also be an interesting piano concert: http://www.carnevale.venezia.it/event/il-pianista-fuori-posto/ (the entry on the website is available only in italian). This guys is quite awesome, he often performs for free, outside from concert halls, right in the middle of people, like a common street musician. Plot twist: his piano will be suspended 5 metres above water!
This is it, for today. We will be back again with you for more updates on Carnival and much else! Have fun!
